A lonely tree in the desert valley of Wadi Rum. He wasn’t so lonely at one time; he used to be the most popular tree in town.

The Citadel in Amman (Jordan) had some interesting ruins an an even more interesting museum (which looked as if it wouldn’t be worth the visit and ended up containing some fragments of the original Dead-Sea Scrolls as well as the oldest known example of an anthropomorphic sculpture!).

Dad, Eilish, Marie and I spent a nice evening driving around Wadi Rum (Jordan) in the pickup truck of our friendly Bedouin guide. The picture doesn’t really capture how beautiful it looked as the sun went down. I think of it as a testament to the fact that I will take a picture of something even when I know it’s not going to come out well and then, adding insult to injury, I will inflict this picture on the wider world. If I think of it as a piece of self-deprecating art I can do all of this with a sense of ironic detachment & so I don’t even need to be embarrassed about it. Expect more of this sort of thing.

The stairs lead up to our apartment. The triangular bit jutting out on the right-hand-side is our front balcony.
