6 year Blogiversary

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

I just noticed that, as of yesterday, I’ve been blogging for 6 years! On November 2nd 2003 I wrote my first post.

Crazy, eh?

I ended the post with the hope that “perhaps some of it [the content of my blog] will rise above the whitenoise of humdrum.”

Let’s make that the aim for the next 6 years also!

A new feature

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

So, Zoomtard has launched a new sub-site where he promises to discuss Karl Barth’s Church Dogmatics briefly and a few pages at a time. It’s going to take him at least 5 years! I’m looking forward to it tremendously. He’s doing the world of lazy theologians a great service.

This all strikes me as a great idea. I’m not quite up to so momentous an undertaking as Barth’s CD as of yet but I though I might implement something similar here on my blog. Most Sundays I have a bit of spare time for reading (it’s the only time I get to read some weeks). So, in a blatant ripoff of Zoomy’s idea, I will try to post a short (under 150 words, say) summary/response/thought about whatever I happen to pick up and read on a given Sunday. For Sundays where I don’t have time to read anything I’ll post a short quote of some nature. this way I’ll get at least one post up here a week and I get to have a brief record of some of what I read.

I’ll post the first of these later this evening.

Obviously, when I said “I will remember to take some pictures …” in my last post I really meant to say “I will completely forget my camera”. That was obvious to everybody, right? I wouldn’t want to cause any confusion.

Rome was nice. I’d show you some pictures to prove that but, …

busy

Friday, December 15th, 2006

I’ve been busy, as per usual. So – no blog posts, &c.

I’m going to Rome this weekend. I will remember to take some pictures that I can post up here, for your amusement, delectation, &c.

I should get a chance to do some posting over the holidays and next term should leave more space for things like blogging, thinking, sleeping, &c.

I may also tweak the blog theme a little. I’ve grown tired of it as it is.

Etc.

Cork1

In other news, one of the nice presents I got for my birthday was a small-enough-to-carry-around 2megapixel digital camera which I hope to to put to good use here on the blog.

This is a picture I took out of the car window in Cork a few days ago.

The camera can go higher quality than this, I need to experiment a little to see what suits. It’s a lot better than that tiny toy-camera I was using previously.

Spam! (and some links)

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

I am now getting 20+ spam comments per day on this blog. They, like all comments here, get kept for moderation by myself so you, good reader, will never see them. Still, it is very annoying. If I ever got a real comment I feel sure it would be deleted with all the spam.

Here are a few interesting links that I’ve come across over the last few days:

  • Used books:
    • I found an interesting search engine for rare and out of print books – AddAll. I can now check this after AbeBooks has been unable to find a book for me.
  • N.T. Wright:
    • John Piper says N.T. Wright’s “understanding of Paul is wrong and his view of justification is harmful to the church and to the human soul. Few things are more precious than the truth of justification by faith alone because of Christ alone. As a shepherd of a flock of God’s blood-bought church, I feel responsible to lead the sheep to life-giving pastures. That is not what the sheep find in Wright’s view of Paul on justification. He is an eloquent and influential writer and is, I believe, misleading many people on the doctrine of justification.”
    • A fake interview between Wright and John Piper.
    • Alastair asks Why is Wright Misrepresented and Misunderstood?
  • Warrior Children?:

Blogging tools

Friday, August 4th, 2006

I thought that I would post a list of various online tools that I use that I have found particularly useful:

  • Bloglines is a really fantastic blog aggregator that is really the only thing that makes it possible for me to keep track of more than a handful of blogs. It’s just fantastic. I currently have 134 blog feeds being watched by Bloglines.
  • Co.mments.com is a great tool I came across recently that allows you to keep track of the comments stream of a particular blogpost. I often make comments and forget about them, or forget to check back on interesting posts for new comments. no longer!
  • Flickr is an image sharing tool and, as such, not in any way limited to blogs. I intend to make much more use of this in the near future, you have been warned. There is a little flickr box on the right hand side of my blog page, where my most recent three photos are displayed.
  • Tadalist is not really related to blogging at all. It’s a great, simple tool for making ‘todo lists’. One of the lists I have on there is a list of potential future blog posts.
  • Del.icio.us is a ’social bookmarking tool’ allowing you to store bookmarks, which you can tag with relevant keywords and which you can easily share with others. The sharing aspect aside, which I have no experience, this allows you to liberate your list of bookmarks from a particular machine (or even a particular browser on a particular machine). Also, the ability to tag bookmarks makes their organisation much easier. One tag I use on occasion is for-blog, which reminds me I wish to blog about this particular link.

If you have found any other online tools to be useful for blogging, or just useful in general, feel free to leave a comment and let me know!

While the posts promised in my last entry here are still cooking slowly over the candle of my mind, I’m busy this week getting lots of mathematics done by day so I can attend the SoundEye Poetry Festival in the evenings. I have posted some brief impressions on what I’ve seen so far on my poetry blog.

Not that any of this is meant as an excuse or anything like that.

Me

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

I have been playing with that little toy camera again, with a view to put pictures of things from my daily life on the blog.

Here’s a picture of myself:
Me, me, me

This is, in part, a test to see if that image will display OK. I have saved it to flickr, rather than uploading it onto the blog via wordpress.

Expect more posts over the next few days.

I have been keeping a `theology journal’ recently, which I update semi-regularly. I think I might rewrite and post some of the heresies I’ve been keeping there.

I also want to talk more about the whole complementarian/egalitarian issue. I have been facilitating a series of bible studies on the topic here at my fellowship.

I may use the little camera, as mentioned above, and snap random bits and pieces. We’ll see if that works out – no promises. I’ve found in the past that it’s impossible to take decent photos with the thing. I suppose I could buy a small cheap-ish digital camera that I could carry around.

I have been reading some N.T. Wright and some Karl Barth, among many other things. I’ll probably have something to say about all of this too.

More?; probably.

Comment spam

Friday, May 26th, 2006

I’ve been getting a lot of comment spam on the blog recently. I moderate all comments, so readers will not have seen any of this. Still, I feel warm inside every time I get this particular gem:

“Your site is very cognitive. I think you will have good future.:)”

Sweet, isn’t it?
