Getting there…

April 10th, 2003 by admin

My epic journey towards having a decent internet access scenario at home has taken another step forward. I’ll be getting a nice new D-Link DL-615+ Wireless Access Point on Saturday for the bargain price of 125 euro. That’s all I needed to complete my setup at home. Now, I’ve just got to wait for eircom to get their head out of whatever dark place they have it shoved, and get my DSL set up in the exchange.

In other news, I’ll be in Dublin over the weekend, if anybody wants to buy me meet me for a pint ;)

Wireless APs

April 9th, 2003 by admin

Been looking at Wireless (802.11b) Access Points recently, with a view to getting a reasonably cheap one over the next couple of weeks. There are a lot of good ones out there, but the really nice ones seem to be available in Ireland for about three times what they are available for in the US. And as for Germany… well their prices are unbelievably low, but I can’t read German, and their sites are (generally) not in English.

Any suggestions for AP/Routers from Irish vendors greatly appreciated.

thinkgeek.eu?

April 8th, 2003 by admin

It occurred to me last night that people in Ireland, the UK and the rest of Europe might be better served by a European thinkgeek-type website than the existing US-based one. People have been complaining about import duties being (seemingly arbitrarily) imposed on products they have been buying from the US.

I’m very tempted to look into what it would entail to start up such a site with a view to setting up something small scale initially. It would probably be better though to supply merchandise from Germany than Ireland, as German prices are reasonable.

Definitely something to think about, if the demand is there, given the current economic climate.

Home improvements…

April 7th, 2003 by admin

Not really, but I did buy myself a cheap desk, swivel chair and some surge protectors over the weekend. I’ve set up the alcove at the bottom of the living room as my office now, so Louise is happy, I’ve finally got all of the computers and other bits out of the bedroom. Ah, domestic bliss.

Had a barbecue out at her parents place last night too, great weather for it, and a good time was had by all. Especially those of us who headed down to Conna afterwards to see Monty’s Pass arriving home. Our timing was impeccable, we arrived ten minutes before the horse, and Lou’s little nephew was delighted that he even got to pat the horse.

Just realised, I haven’t made any entry in this ‘blog since last Wednesday, my longest break yet. Probably because I was having so much fun with the wireless kit that was delivered on Thursday. All I need now is an Ethernet->Wireless bridge/router and for my bloody DSL to be set up, and I’ll be a very happy man. Though more money wouldn’t go astray either ;)

Wireless update and Red Hat training

April 2nd, 2003 by admin

Looks like we’ll be getting into offering official Red Hat training here (Eirteic Consulting) in the next couple of months if people are interested enough. This is good, because if we do start to make a few bob out of it, I’ll probably get to go on a course myself, and sit the trainer’s exam. :)

Also ordered my two Buffalo wireless PCMCIA cards and a PCI adapter from PC Pro on the company account earlier today and they’ll be delivered tomorrow! Things are looking up. Now just waiting on my DSL line, but hopefully that won’t be long. Maybe another week, or two at the outside.

It’s all a big conspiracy against me! ;)

As I may have mentioned (or not) I’m looking for wireless kit. Linux-supported wireless kit, to be more specific. So after much hunting I decided yesterday upon two Linksys cards, a WMP11 and a WPC11 from Amazon in the UK, as it seems to be common knowledge that these cards use a Prism 2/2.5 chipset (which is well supported under Linux).

Then, this morning, while doing a bit of searching for various bits of wireless info, I discovered a few sites which claim that the current rev of the Linksys kit uses a totally unsupported (in Linux) el cheapo Broadcom chipset. Needless to say, I hit the roof.

However, it looks like my employer is coming to the rescue, as we have an account with PC Pro, who I have been informed stock Buffalo 802.11b cards, which use the aforementioned Prism 2 chipset.

Nice one. I may yet get this wireless network off the ground. And when my DSL arrives… well let’s just say I wouldn’t be averse to working from home occassionally not often, maybe 4 days a week?

A good start to a wet and windy morning…

April 1st, 2003 by admin

Just lost a big chunk of data to a filesystem problem following three consecutive kernel panics as I played with a binary wireless (rtl8180) driver. Damn. That never happened before. But then, I was planning on starting afresh with Linux Mandrake 9.1 anyway. It would have been nice to have the opportunity to back things up first though.

Now to find my hsf linmodem drivers somewhere on the web, as the link from www.linmodems.org is broken.

In spite of my best intentions…

March 31st, 2003 by admin

… I rarely seem to update this ‘blog at the weekend. Not that much HAPPENS at the weekend, but it’s the principle of the thing ;)

I had a great weekend up in Maynooth at my parents house. Unsuccessfully tried to crack my first copy-protected game, Grand Theft Auto 3, so that I have a backup copy and don’t have to carry the original around with me. I’ll probably just have a look for a ‘No CD’ crack instead when I have time.

Also bought a WLAN card from Proinnsias for only e25. It’s a Rtl8180-based card which works happily under Windows with the supplied drivers, but has binary only modules for Linux, specifically Red Hat 7.1 / 7.2 / 7.3 / 8.0. As I’m running Mandrake 9.1 (thanks Pron!) this poses something of a problem. Forced loading of the drivers leads to kernel panics within 5-10 minutes. They have been kind enough to supply some source, though the important stuff is still in a pre-compiled object file. Well, I will get it running… one way or another.

More (and better) DSL news!

March 28th, 2003 by admin

Hooray for me, I beat the system ;)

If you’ve been reading my ‘blog, you’ll know from yesterday about the stumbling block with regard to getting DSL. I needed account details from eircom, to forward to Esat BT, to confirm our ownership of the line, so that they’d put in the DSL. If you can’t follow that, don’t worry… I can barely understand it, and it’s happening to me.

Anyway, I discovered that the contract form that eircom had sent us to sign has the relevant details on it, so I faxed a copy of it to the sales person in Esat BT. When I spoke to him this afternoon he confimed that he now has everything he needs to go ahead. :)

Now, the long wait – Esat BT’s agreement with eircom provides for up to a four week lead time on these jobs. However, I’m optimistic. After all, I was quoted 4 weeks for telephone line installation and they did it in two days!

Thank Crunchie it’s Friday ™

March 28th, 2003 by admin

Heading up to Maynooth for the weekend this afternoon to see the parents and my one sibling who hasn’t left the country. Louise is going to crucify me though, because I forgot to make up an MP3 CD for the car going up. Still, it’s probably better than having to listen to ‘Blue’ and ‘Nelly’ all the way to Maynooth ;)

Broke my licensed copy of the software I’m supposed to be using to study for my exam too last night. Normally I’d get great satisfaction over that but this necessitates a bug report, which means I can’t study over the weekend. And I still have to do the exam on April 28th. Dammit.

DSL update

March 27th, 2003 by admin

Ah, at last… the big stumbling block I was waiting for has arrived. Esat want a copy of either a phone bill or a letter from eircom including the phone account number, line number, name and address. As the line went in less than two weeks ago, I have neither of those and eircom refuse to supply me with a letter. When I queried this, I was then forwarded to their “Credit” department for some reason. This led to me being put on hold for nearly 15 minutes and then hung up on. Not that I expected any better from eircom, but this is infuriating. No wonder so few people have availed of DSL in this country, if this is the kind of crap they have to put up with.

My next call is going to be to the data protection commissioner, as I believe I am entitled to have eircom send me the details I have requested.

My memory profiling app.

March 27th, 2003 by admin

The memory profiling app I’ve mentioned on the ILUG mailing list and the IRC channel (#linux) is taking shape.

I’m absolutely dreadful at C string manipulation – which is something I will have to look into – and was having trouble getting VmSize in a usable form from /proc/pid/status. Last night, I got fed up and decided to just rip off some of the source from “top”, and in doing so, discovered that top and the other packages in the procps package get their data from the libproc library! Alleluia!

However, it’s pointed out to me that I really am going to have to get to grips with the string stuff in C. Any pointers ;) to related resources would be gratefully received.

Finally!

March 26th, 2003 by admin

After much F-ing and blinding, I got the DSL application forms faxed out to me this morning :) Now all I have to do is get Louise’s signature on them (the phone line is in her name) and hopefully I’ll be all set.

Though they did say that they have to ask a few basic credit-related questions of me too, so you’d never know. I can’t imagine that my credit is all that good right now. :( That said, I have been with my bank for 16 years, and will be paying by direct debit… hopefully points in my favour.

Incidentally, thanks to longword on #linux I now understand the essential difference between PPPoA which Esat are using for their residential customers apparently and PPPoE which they’re using for their business customers (i.e. me). The upshot of it is that MAC address info is not visible to Esat over PPPoA, so it doesn’t matter how many PCs you put on the end of your residential line, though the contract does limit you to one.

Uprising in Basra?

March 26th, 2003 by admin

Since five p.m. last night there have been reports of a popular uprising against Saddam Hussein in Basra. There’s been no independent verification of this yet though, so maybe it’s all part of the psychological war. On the other hand, it has also been reported that the coalition forces bombing campaign has deprived up to 60% of Basra of water. I’ll be accused of unfair bias for this comment, but this is going to create a MASSIVE humanitarian crisis.
Basra is NOT a small city. And the US and Britian will deny respensibility for the resulting deaths of civilians.

Resignation

March 25th, 2003 by admin

Well, I’ve just resigned as Secretary of the ILUG. Under article 7.2 of the constitution, I’m required to give 14 days notice, but I’ve volunteered to stay on until they can co-opt someone to replace me. At least, I don’t think it makes sense to hold an EGM so close to the AGM.

I’ve been feeling for some time that what with time & money constraints, I should stand down and let someone else take over. Someone with fresher and more radical ideas (and more time). I feel that the committee needs a good shake up and that the AGM (due in May or June, IIRC) would be a good time.

My reasons for finally resigning now are simple. I don’t have the time to put into origanising anything for the LinuxWorld Expo, nor will I be even able to attend. So good luck to my replacement whoever (s)he may be.

Is it just me…

March 24th, 2003 by admin

…or am I not able to get at blogs.linux.ie from an IOLFree dialup account? Maybe I should stop being so cheap and PAY! ;)

Well, back at work today after a fabulous weekend, where I got to see almost the whole family. Must do these things more often. As a result, am heading to Maynooth at the weekend to see my parents and bring a whole load of boxsets of Red Hat 8 up for LinuxWorld/ICT-Expo. Assuming I can get them in time. Working on it though.

Also http://dear_raed.blogspot.com/ has been updated again finally. Just as well, I had been having doubts about whether or not he’d survived the bombings on Friday night.

Continuing attacks on Iraq

March 21st, 2003 by admin

Just watching EuroNews. Looks like the US spent the night bombing Baghdad. They’re saying they took out Saddam Hussein’s main palace complex, and the office of Tariq Aziz. No sign of any chemical or biological weapons yet either, contrary to what we were led to expect by Bush and Blair.

Last update to http://dear_raed.blogspot.com/ was about 10:33P.M last night, though I’m not sure what timezone that is, blogspot.com is hosted in the US, I think. At that time anyway, Salam said all Iraqi TV and radio stations were still up and running. Funny, I was under the impression that these were important strategic targets.

DSL!

March 20th, 2003 by admin

No, I haven’t got it yet, but…

I was planning on going for the crappy 256k down / 128k up residential service with a 4GB cap offered by Esat BT for e54.45 per month including VAT. I got the line test done and was waiting for the application forms to arrive. However, I spoke to “she who must be obeyed (or else)” about it last night and we came to the conclusion that the 108.90 per month offering which is 512k down / 256k up with no cap would be infinitely preferable as we wouldn’t have to watch our traffic. I rang ‘em this afternoon and they’re sending me out new forms. And they have no problems with me running Linux either :)

My new mail signature, a wonderfully appropriate quote from Shaw:

War…? Or just a murder campaign?

March 20th, 2003 by admin

In the early hours of this morning, George W. Bush took the decision to ignore the UN and gave the order to begin bombing Iraq. This without even recourse to any of his so-called “coalition partners”. No reaction from Tony Blair yet, but I still (naively) hope this act will mean the end of the US/UK partnership on this immoral US-led crusade for cheap oil.

I also await the USAs withdrawal from the UN. Why? Because why continue to waste US taxpayers money on an assembly which the US are going to ignore at their President’s whim.

For an perspective on what’s going on within Iraq right now that is NOT coloured by US media prejudices take a look at this blog: http://dear_raed.blogspot.com/
