Uprising in Basra?

Wednesday, March 26th, 2003

Since five p.m. last night there have been reports of a popular uprising against Saddam Hussein in Basra. There’s been no independent verification of this yet though, so maybe it’s all part of the psychological war. On the other hand, it has also been reported that the coalition forces bombing campaign has deprived up to 60% of Basra of water. I’ll be accused of unfair bias for this comment, but this is going to create a MASSIVE humanitarian crisis.
Basra is NOT a small city. And the US and Britian will deny respensibility for the resulting deaths of civilians.

Continuing attacks on Iraq

Just watching EuroNews. Looks like the US spent the night bombing Baghdad. They’re saying they took out Saddam Hussein’s main palace complex, and the office of Tariq Aziz. No sign of any chemical or biological weapons yet either, contrary to what we were led to expect by Bush and Blair.

Last update to http://dear_raed.blogspot.com/ was about 10:33P.M last night, though I’m not sure what timezone that is, blogspot.com is hosted in the US, I think. At that time anyway, Salam said all Iraqi TV and radio stations were still up and running. Funny, I was under the impression that these were important strategic targets.

My new mail signature, a wonderfully appropriate quote from Shaw:

“I see little divinity about them or you. You talk to me of
Christianity when you are in the act of hanging your enemies.
Was there ever such blasphemous nonsense!”

War…? Or just a murder campaign?

In the early hours of this morning, George W. Bush took the decision to ignore the UN and gave the order to begin bombing Iraq. This without even recourse to any of his so-called “coalition partners”. No reaction from Tony Blair yet, but I still (naively) hope this act will mean the end of the US/UK partnership on this immoral US-led crusade for cheap oil.

I also await the USAs withdrawal from the UN. Why? Because why continue to waste US taxpayers money on an assembly which the US are going to ignore at their President’s whim.

For an perspective on what’s going on within Iraq right now that is NOT coloured by US media prejudices take a look at this blog: http://dear_raed.blogspot.com/
