Upgrading to Ubuntu Edgy Eft a “Nightmare”

A Slashdot article indicates that upgrading to Ubuntu Edgy Eft is a nightmarish process fraught with danger at all sides.

I’d just like to take this opportunity to let you all know that the Slackware 11 upgrade I performed on my desktop during the week went so smoothly that I ended up wasting an hour looking for broken stuff (I did find something – I had to remove 5 characters from my Samba config).

Slackware – the distro for people who’ve been fucked by apt

  1. I’m glad the upgrade went so well for you; I (unfortunately?) stopped using Slackware while Warty was under development after seeing it demo’ed at South Birmingham LUG. I remember spending ages to compile and install xyz, only to find pretty much the same thing could be done with a single ‘apt-get install xyz’ – ok, some of the compile flags and options might not be quite what you’d like (especially with things like php), but that’s normally a minor thing.

I’ve not upgraded to Edgy yet, out of fear of it breaking stuff – and reading the various reports online is only delaying that process. I think I’ll wait a few days/weeks before making the jump.

    David.

There’s no doubt that apt is easy and I could use a dependency tracking installer here myself (slackpkg or slapt-get or swaret or something) but the flakiness is just too much. I don’t find myself compiling that much – there’s a pretty decent selection of packages for Slack anyway. I always compile stuff like mplayer no matter what distro I’m on. If there are 100 configure options you’ll never find a package with exactly what you want… :)

Always keep your home directories on a separate partition – that way you can break and rebuild an entire system and not have to worry about borkage.

Ah, good old slackware. The very first distro I ever installed. I keep meaning to give the later versions a try, but at the moment debian does all I want and more.

I’ve been finding Debian stable very frustrating lately… Getting FreeNX to work is a bit of a nightmare

As for giving newer versions a try… they’re probably much the same as what you remember :)
