For what it’s worth – Monday the 24th is going to be the most depressing day – “Scientists” have concluded this – the BBC have an article on it – so it must be true !
There’s lots of stuff I haven’t blogged lately – for various reasons … maybe later in the week I’ll scribble down a few thoughts and do something about that.
In the meantime – I came across this article on how to get a little more out of your day … how to get that focus we all lose about this time of year.
#linux (on irc.linux.ie) has been getting some unwelcome attention lately from a script kiddie and a network of ‘zombie’ machines.
Which makes today’s UserFriendly even more apt than normal.
If you’re joining us on #linux in the next few days and you’re not a regular … send a message to me (pron) for an invite if you can’t normally get in. (We’ve occasionally had to set the channel to invites only because of the attacks)
To many what would seem like rocket-science was described as “Embarrassingly Simple”. That said, the overview of what they do, the magic behind the very simple fascade that is a href=”http://www.google.ie/”>Google and the people present made it a very interesting evening.
As was pointed out to me though – no-one asked the question “How many machines do Google have ?”
The only answer I’ve ever seen given to that is “Enough !”
If you’re interested in working for Google, you should really check out that link. Some really great jobs, but their interview process is rumoured to be <ahem> comprehensive !
Just for the Fuzz of it !
Well – would you buy a uesd car from him ?
This site: Apple Tracking is very useful for keeping an eye on those orders from apple … once you have that ‘tracking number’ they email you – starting with 80nnnnnnn
But which one’s which ?
If it looks too good to be true – it probably is !
Got a spam this morning offering me a pre-approved $200,000 mortgage for $350 per month.
Given my own mortgage is in that ballpark, and payments are easily more than double the $350 per month, I thought I’d do some maths:
I’ll make a generous APR offer of 1.5%
Present Value of -200000
Rate per month of 0.125% (1.5/12)
Payments of 350
Plug that into your favourite spreadsheet:
NPER(Rate/Mth, PMT, PV) tells me that I’d have 1003 payments … or approx 83.5 years of mortgage indebtedness …
Just say NO !
It’s official – I’m a year older (as of yesterday !) … It’s been a rather eventful year, and somewhat stressful because of a few family circumstances. But all in all – it’s been good.
Michael got his daddy a birthday present of a U2 iPod … of course I won’t actually get it for another few weeks … but when I do …
In other news Parcelfarce haven’t yet noticed that a package they delivered to me this morning is even in the country ! (Despite it being a day later than their Euro48 promised “within 48 hours”) – le sigh !
It’s been one of those weeks – best summed up as :
You load sixteen tons an’ whaddya get?
Another day older an’ deeper in debt
Saint Peter doncha call me ’cause I can’t go
I owe my soul to the company sto’
The preacher’s Sunday sermon was Forgive Your Enemies.
He asked, how many have forgiven their enemies?
About half held up their hands.
He then repeated his question.
Now about 80% held up their hands.
He then repeated his question again.
All responded, except one elderly lady.
“Mrs. Jones, are you not willing to forgive your enemies?” asked the preacher.
“I don’t have any.” she replied.
“Mrs. Jones, that is very unusual.
How old are you?” asked the preacher.
“Ninety-three.” she replied.
“Mrs. Jones, please come down in front and tell the congregation how a person
cannot have an enemy in the world.” asked the preacher.
The little sweetheart of a lady tottered down the aisle, and said,
“It’s easy, I just outlived all those bitches.”
thestar.ie have a classic headline today about the stolen portion of the ‘B’ Sample from Cian O’Connor’s Olympic-winning horse.
Current Electoral Vote Predictor 2004 Andy Tannenbaum’s analysis shows Kerry set to win … we’ll know soon enough !
The Janesville Gazette reports on a glitch in the early-voting and absentee balloting which means that votes cast early by people who die before the actual election may well count in many cases. Mainly because they’ll (properly) be virtually impossible to trace.
This article is just too funny – and true !
Jeremy Clarkson: Fight terror and look good, too
Then you have the proposals for CCTV cameras throughout the Palace of Westminster. Why? So that security experts will be able to work out what the suicide bomber looked like before he became a thin veneer on the walls.
No, I’m not bonkers !
Samhain (today – Nov 1st), is the start of the Celtic new year. The eve of the new year – what we now call Halloween – was possibly the most frightening time of year for the Celts. They believed that it was the time when the border between the spirit world and the real world was blurred.
The bonfires lit on that night would provide the embers for each household to start the new years’ fires, the fires that would keep them warm, and fed for the rest of the year.
Nowadays it’s push a button, twiddle a knob !
Happy new year !
