Hmm … one for ComReg ?

Friday, May 30th, 2003

Hmm … DSL was installed in the in-laws’ house last night … bandwidth … Thanks Netsource !

BUT … As soon as Netsource were told that the line had been unbundled and plugged into a DSLAM in the exchange, and Eircom Sales rep called the mother-in-law trying to sell her DSL …

I’m not convinced that it’s a co-incidence, it’s happened a few others I know of as well !

Hmm …

Last weekend as a free man !

Friday, May 30th, 2003

My boss just left for the evening, and reminded me that this is my last weekend as a free man ! I get married (in case you didn’t know) tomorrow-week, Saturday the 7th of June.

Somehow, while I’m kinda nervous to an extent, I’m looking forward to it …

Overworked

Thursday, May 29th, 2003

As usual, I’m feeling overworked … could be the pressure of doing a full days work in here, and then trying to organise a wedding and stuff as well … Either way it gets painful, I awoke this morning knowing I was getting old, I had what felt like a hangover – problem is that I haven’t had a pint in almost a month !

Wedding Countdown

Thursday, May 29th, 2003

Only 9 days now to D-Day. Sinéad’s getting anxious about some of the details, things like how the cake will look, what flowers will be like and the like. It should all fall into place … and either way in just over a week we’ll be married and on our way to sunny Martinique !

Wedding Countdown

Monday, May 26th, 2003

Only 12 days to go now … so much to do, and so little time to do it …

Met the couple who will be living next door to us (when the house is finished) last night … they seem nice enough, and are about as frustrated as we are with the whole saga … can anyone tell me if this is normal in the trade that it’s always “Next Month” … since January … and from the looks of it there’s easily 6 to 8 weeks work left.

Battery Life at last !

Monday, May 26th, 2003

Thanks to Elrond, I’ve just got a new APC battery for my Sony Vaio (FX-401) laptop. The Sony battery that comes with it has never given more than about 45 mins to an hour of battery life … the new APC battery on the other hand gives it three or more hours itself. In fact, with both batteries inserted Windows was estimating over 5:35 battery life, after booting (which drains about 30% of the Sony battery !)

Laptop-Mode

Friday, May 23rd, 2003

In my quest for better laptop performance I’ve patched Mandrake’s kernel source with this patch which I spotted on KernelTrap … lets see if it’s all it’s cracked up to be !

JSP – Fun’n'Games

Thursday, May 22nd, 2003

I’ve been taking my mind off the house stresses by actually doing some work for a change … moving a bunch of scripts from one server to another, and in the process translating a bunch of PHP pages to JSP … Of course I don’t konw any Java/JSP so I had to learn !!

Trial and Error was the order of the day, with a lot more errors than trials, but I got there, and the site is now live on the development server for testing. To be rolled out soon !

I’m happy !

Frankie goes Postal

Thursday, May 22nd, 2003

Got word on Tuesday night from the estate agent that the house now won’t be completed until the end of July … Serious stress elevation ensued, I’ve only just about calmed down a little thanks in no small part to Wibble !

Got on to our solicitor afterwards to let him know, and to get him to try and get an explanation of the delays, the house was originally suppposed to be completed in January, so six months worth of delays is going a little over the top. Not expecting much, but we might at least get a completion date in writing.

Eyesight test

Monday, May 19th, 2003

They’re doing VDU eyesight tests this week in work … had mine this morning ..
It’s really amusing to know more about your eyesight than the person testing is testing … (eg: that I can see 75Hz flicker Vs “Do you experience headaches when using a VDU?”)

For the record, looks like my left eye is a little lazy, otherwise I aced everything, which had less to do with eyesight, and more to do with being able to read randomly flashing characters on a screen !

Three weeks and counting

Monday, May 19th, 2003

The wedding is now only three weeks away, and things are starting to heat up … RSVPs are coming in fast and furious … people calling with gifts etc … wellwishers …
Chose most of the outstanding parts of the Ceremony last night, the vows etc …
Starting to get nervous … not cold-feet or anything like that … more like just the standing up in front of a hundred or more of our closest family and friends and “performing” … making our vows etc.
Commence les jeux !

Quote of the day

Friday, May 16th, 2003

Over lunch with a few colleagues we were discussing the average life expectancies of men and women in Ireland … and women live, on average three to five years longer than the men … the quote from one of the lads had to be recorded …

Bloody women, they live longer and they have multiple orgasms

If his better half ever finds out I’d say he’s for it !!

Car hire for Martinique

Friday, May 16th, 2003

I’m taking Sinéad to Martinique on honeymoon, all that’s left to arrange of that is the car hire … now, do I go for the inexpensive, reliable, and comfortable Renault Clio or Megane with AirCon, or for the overpriced Convertable Renault Megane … Hmm ..

OpenSource on XP

Friday, May 16th, 2003

My manager in Dublin just got a new laptop, and realised that he had neither an Office package or a reasonable email client (doesn’t like Outlook Express !) … So I introduced him to OpenOffice.org and Mozilla on XP … he’s well impressed so far, especially with the new Spam filters in Mozilla 1.4b

RPM woes

Friday, May 16th, 2003

RPM is a pain in the proverbials … it’s official !
I was upgrading a RH 7.3 based server last night when RPM decided it didn’t want to co-operate, junked the packages file and corrupted the DB ..
Managed to install another version of RPM, but the damned thing now doesn’t know what packages its’ predecessor installed … so while the box is up, running and stable, updates / management of it are going to be painful … time for a rebuild I think !

Wedding List

Friday, May 16th, 2003

Well it’s official, the wedding list is now out there in Arnotts … Under Sinéad’s name …

Wedding List

Thursday, May 8th, 2003

Well, we’ve an appointment in Arnotts this evening to sort out the wedding list … but they’ve warned us that it might take a week or two to computerise it … this should be fun … but hey …
Have to look into insuring the brother on my car while he’s over in .ie … since I won’t be using it much he might as well get some use out of it …. although it might be cheaper for him to hire a car !

Got the Jag

Wednesday, May 7th, 2003
How to keep Sinéad happy, get her what she wants :o )

In this case, she wants a Jag as the wedding car … so with much searching … DJ managed to come up with the goods … Kudos to that man … he’s going to get a large number of pints at my expense one of these days !!

Stag do … one down !

Tuesday, May 6th, 2003

Hmm … stag do was over the weekend … and $DEITY did they make my head hurt …

On the Saturday night down in Tralee, the lads decided it’d be fun to try and drink me under the table … Well I was filled with numerous pints of Guinness and Murphys, a good amount of a rather nice Chilean Shiraz (Red Wine), then came the “interesting drinks” … the double vodka in a pint-glass with a bottle of blue WKD thrown in, followed by a double whiskey (Powers), followed by Jagermeister, a number of bottles of Smirnoff Ice, a few more pints … and well one godawful hangover !

In my best impression of Christy Moore “And then I swore that I’d never, ever, ever drink again !”

The following day I had some amount of revenge though, as the lads decided to handcuff me to something, anything … so I introduced them to the Houdini catch on all handcuffs sold retail (No, they’re not on Garda handcuffs … but hey … this lot didn’t know ..) Thomas was not very amused !
