Leinster Rugby match

Monday, April 28th, 2003

Went to the match yesterday with Wibble. The game itself (from a Leinster / Irish PoV) was dire … Leinster’s kicker missed four of five kicking chances in the first half, and despite that, they went in at half-time 3-0 up !
Just before half-time a punter in the crowd remarked “If this gets any more exciting, a funeral might break out!” … I have to say I agreed with the sentiment …
In the end they lost by ten points … 21-11 … not that anyone was suprised … the french came out in the second half playing like college students, to the Leinster schoolboys … rubbish game overall …
As wibble commented, the tickets to the final just got a whole lot easier to get !!!

Wedding list …

Saturday, April 26th, 2003

Seems we might be doing a wedding list thing after all … It’s been suggested to us a few times now, and people actually expect us to have one … oh well … I suppose it can’t hurt to wander around Arnotts for a few hours one of the days … it also avoids the messing of ending up with eight two-slot toasters and thirteen ironing boards !

Another couple married

Saturday, April 26th, 2003
Was at another wedding yesterday, that of John and Julie.
Despite a bad start to the day with rain across Dublin, the sun came out as soon as the bride arrived, and by the time they emerged from the registry office, the sun was out full.
Congratulations to both of you.

Another great statement from Microsoft !!

This page on Microsoft.com mentions:

Companies are able to download free Web site provisioning tools for Linux only and large companies build their own provisioning tools as components of larger OSS suites. This is one of the reasons Linux has historically been the shared hosting platform of choice. By combining the scalability and reliability features of Windows 2000 with an automated Web site creation and provisioning tool, we are able to position Windows 2000 as an equivalent shared Web-hosting platform.

Lads … that’s just playing catch-up … and we’re the ones supposed to be doing the catching up … is Linux now at the stage where you’re feeling threatened or something ?

Microsoft Corp. !
I was sent a MS Project file with details of a set of tasks I have to complete within. This wasn’t too bad, as I have a licenced copy of MS Project’98 on my machine here …
Project opened up with a dialog saying:

This file was created by a later version of Microsoft Project. To open this file, you need a converter that you can download from the Web site. Adter downloading the converter, please restart Microsoft Project and reopen the file.

Do you want to connect to the site to download the converter now?
[Yes] [No]

And bringing me to this url. Well I nearly rolled off my chair laughing when I read it …

You have reached this page because you opened a Microsoft Project 2000 or a Microsoft Project 2002 file using Microsoft Project 98 and are expecting to download a file converter. Unfortunately, the converter does not exist, and there are no plans to develop one.

It’s been a while ….

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2003

Well, things are starting to take shape … We’re just back from a great weekend in Doolin with some of the crowd … generally enjoyed what was one of the best Easter weekends we’ve had in a long time.
This new job is taking its toll on my free time, and for that matter on my brain-power … the amount I’m having to learn is enormous …
Signed a few new GPG keys last night … so at least I might almost look trustworthy some time soon(ish)
What else …
Valen’s getting married on Friday (about time too !!), arrived into work this morning to find the invite in my Inbox ..
Um … what else ….
Mandrake 9.1 is nice .. I’m using it on the laptop now … and have most things working … I’m not convinced about the ACPI support in the kernel being too good though … doesn’t power-off on shutdown and causes a few hangs … must investigate further !
Booked the hotel in Martinique last week … and paid off the one in Paris … so things are starting to come together … realised today that I’d been keeping Ken in the dark … sorry Ken … thinking too much again !!

OMG! OMG! OMG!

Monday, April 7th, 2003

It’s Monday again … and things I’ve done over the weekend are sinking in … But first … I promised a few people I’d blog a little more about the eXpo last week … and I will, as soon as I get a little clarity about what actually happened !

Went mad at the weekend … went into town on Saturday with the intention of buying a suit for the wedding … maybe even a shirt and tie !!
Arrived into Louis Copeland’s shop on Wicklow St. and was well impressed with their range … so talking to one of the assistants started trying a few on … then all sense departed me …
Having looked at a number of nice suits in the E500 or so range … I tried on an Italian hand-made suit … Sinead’s eyes said it all … and without looking at the pricetag (big mistake in these cases) I said “I’ll take it …”, and only when the price was rung up did I look … almost E1100 … and that was with a discount !

And then there was bad news this morning … looks like the house won’t be ready until June at this stage, and the builders won’t name a date yet … I’m less than impressed … completely less than impressed … The house is physically there, the wiring and plumming is in place, the plasterboard has to go up but it’s essentially built … so where’s the problem lads ? Why is it going to take another two months ??

More madness ….

Well, the ICT Expo is in full swing … we found Raven and Maddog yesterday, got the knoppix CDs toasted … all 400 of ‘em … and everything was going well (barring RedHat sales … but that’s another story) until !
1.00pm … Raven’s talk had finished, quite interesting … and one more talk was scheduled in the Linux Technical strand … by Mr. Meeks … Unfortunately no-one had actully told Michael he was to be talking today, and his travel plans covered tomorrow (Thurs) only !… this left some people who had come to hear him extol the virtues of Gnome 2.2 rather … well disappointed !!
Looking forward to the main LinuxWorld event tomorrow … should prove interesting to say the least … Maddog does a great talk … and the other speakers we have lined up are worth hearing … if you’ve got the time … make your way along to the RDS to see the presentations … they’re going to be worth it !
