Why Girls are Evil

Thursday, March 13th, 2003

Got this link yesterday : Proof that Girls are Evil

Goes something like:

Girls require time and money: Girls = Time * Money
Time is money: Time = Money
   Therefore: Girls = Money * Money = Money^2
Money is the root of all evil: Money = SQRT(Evil)
   Therefore: Girls = (SQRT(Evil))^2
And we are forced to conclude: Girls = Evil

:o )

Traffic, and the busy day that follows !

Thursday, March 13th, 2003

What is it with Dublin traffic … I was later than usual leaving the house this morning, but still arrived in work earlier than normal …
I’d noticed this phenomenon before, but in the other direction, where leaving a half-hour earlier than normal had me arriving about ten minutes later than normal .. Go figure !

‘Twas a very busy day to top things off … mind you, I think Wibble is more stressed than I am today … not that I’m going to say why (I’ll let him blog it if he want’s to …)

I’m running the show tomorrow … so things will probably go to the dogs on me (as usual !)

Obituary

Wednesday, March 12th, 2003

Not unlike many others, The Register got attached to their hardware:

The Register is saddened to announce the apparent demise of its netBook, which drowned in the contents of a bottle of Bordeaux Blanc in the bottom of a Symbian Developer Conference shoulderbag last Friday. “It’s how he would have wanted to go,” sobbed a distraught owner. Just one week previously the netBook had seemed in perfect health, reporting the Microsoft Office 2003 reviewer’s workshop without recharging while Tablet PCs fell over all around him. Sadly, although the IBM Microdrive with the pre-conference backup emerged unscathed from detox, he took the notes from the conference with him. “That’s how he’d have wanted to go as well,” added the owner. Funeral arrangements will be announced should a visit to Psion-Tek ER in Milton-Keynes prove unsuccessful. No flowers please, but if anybody’s got a spare…

May it rust in pieces

Other People’s Releases

Wednesday, March 12th, 2003

<Rant>
A colleague recently (last Friday) had a new baby girl (congratulations Dec). Unfortunately this means an unscheduled week off, leaving me holding the release … not normally a problem excepting the fact that … well … I don’t have the details of what’s being released, or who’s already signed off on it … the joys !

SCO Bites IBM

Tuesday, March 11th, 2003

A LinuxWorld Article on the IBM / SCO lawsuit has an interesting perspective:

They [SCO] claim it took SCO software engineers twenty years to produce SMP code that scales to 32 processors. Hey everybody, please don’t tell them that 20 years ago, there weren’t any 32-processor machines for which to write code; I want to see that spark of illumination come to them in court

Come to think of it, twenty years ago there wasn’t even an 80386 out … certainly not a MultiProcessor one, and any SMP hardware would have been IBM’s own stuff running one of IBM’s custom Operating Systems …

Will IBM figure it’s cheaper to just buy SCO/Caldera than to fight the suit ?

As we may think …

Tuesday, March 11th, 2003

As We May Think by Vannevar Bush is a very interesting article about data access, creation and storage. It describes many features found in computing, the internet and various other fields common to us now. What’s unusual about this particular article is that it was written in the closing days of World War II – in July 1945

r0ml’s Rants …

Monday, March 10th, 2003

ML’s Director of Open Source Strategy, Robert (r0ml) Lefkowitz rants very well …

His latest rant can be found here [NewsForge]… well worth the read.

Good morning Monday !

Monday, March 10th, 2003

$DEITY, I hate Mondays …
But at least the weekend was good, we got up to Drogheda to see the “East Coast Jazz Band” playing a gig in “Solas”, quite impressive … so we booked ‘em for the wedding !!

Also got to see the house, it’s got four walls, a roof, windows and doors now … so we’re looking good for May :)

All in all, despite the fact it’s a Monday, I’m happy !

LinuxWorld Fun

Friday, March 7th, 2003

It’s all fun and games until someone realises that there’s money involved !

The ILUG have been donated a stand at the annual ICT-eXpo / LinuxWorld conference on April 1/2/3 next … but organising sponsorship for us and stuff to give away without treading on people’s toes is proving fun to say the least !

RedHat understandably don’t want to step on Scope’s (the event sponsor) toes, Scope in turn want anyone who donates stuff to the ILUG to become an event sponsor (Silver sponsorship is about €1500)

It’s starting to look as if the event is very much under funded … ILUG have the largest stand we’ve ever had, 6m * 6m, they cost about 11000 Euro for the three day show …

Ear Infection

Friday, March 7th, 2003

No sleep last night … damned ear infection :(
Went to the chemists this morning and got some drops … hopefully they’ll sort it out !

Rebel Code

Thursday, March 6th, 2003

Just finished reading Glyn Moody’s Rebel Code [Amazon.co.uk link] Well worth the read !

House

Wednesday, March 5th, 2003

Just got a call from the estate agent … the builders are still saying May … which is a reasonable start … They did however start off saying February, then April (March was never mentioned), then April again, now May … At least it’s getting closer at some rate …

Lent

Wednesday, March 5th, 2003

Well, it’s Ash Wednesday, and the start of Lent … and already it looks like they’re giving up something … digging the port tunnel to be exact !

Binary Kernel Modules …

Monday, March 3rd, 2003

When, oh when will companies “Get it” ?
Got a nice little wireless PCMCIA card from LevelOne the other day (thanks elrond!). Comes supplied with binary drivers for RedHat’s 2.4.18-3 kernel (RH 7.3).
Great … it’s a binary-only non-GPL driver, but for now I can live with that …

Except that it won’t insmod on a vanilla kernel … it needs a patch that RH manage to include, but doesn’t apply cleanly to newer (2.4.21-preX) kernels …

It doesn’t take much to do it right and supply your binary module with a compilable wrapper that ensures it’s okay for the currently running kernel … Please Realtek … Do this for your 8180L chipset … Please ?

Wedding planning

Monday, March 3rd, 2003

Only three months and four days to go … It’s getting close and there’s lots to be done …
Guest list needs to be finalised this week, rings bought in the very near future, I suppose I should be looking for a suit of some description, cake, cars, honeymoon hotel, and all the rest …

The house should be finished at the start of May, although that’s leaving us kinda tight with snagging etc before we can move in … Hope it makes it … starting married life in someone else’s house isn’t an idea either of us like much … althogh it may come to that !

Update – It’s been mentioned that the house-link above doesn’t always work … if not try here and follow to “Type A”

It’s Monday !

Monday, March 3rd, 2003

That means back to work after the weekend, back online again … and oooh .. lots of activity over the weekend on the LBW mailing lists… Looks like we’re heading to Slovakia for the Second week of August … might even be able to make it …

Sinead did a fair bit of the driving back from Galway yesterday, she’s learning at the moment and somewhat nervous. Mind you at least she has a nice car to do it in … a 99D Clio 1.2
