tuesday
travel, 04:45 leave house for galway airport, wet, miserable, rainy morning. Bumped into CPHennesy and denise at dublin airport, met mmeeks at stansted airport. Off to Trieste (warm dry afternoon), met jody after landing and then louis shortly afterwards, then another OOo pair joined us. This 6 shared taxi to Koper, in hotel by 17:00 local. Relatively pain-free travel in comparison to what I had feared.

Turns out that the majority of the hamburg sun people are in the same hotel, went out with them townwards and met up with pretty much everyone else at little outside bar. Amusingly there was 4 places in a row all pretty much the same, except our one had 50people in it, and the others none. They really must have wondered where they did wrong. End up with joergb and flr and svante at some ungodly hour back in hotel bar.

wednesday
Met fredrich and chatted a bit. Went to ESC, very productive love-in.

surreal event in hotel garden with trad dancers and singing, chatted to cph fo a good bit and met some of the novell guys.

amusing moment when while at back of crowd suddenly ended up at front of crowd as everyone in front evacuated to the furthest reaches of the tented area as the trad dancers went maurauding in search of dance partners. er hauled off as sacrificial engineer.

thursday
everyone wants to know where Dan Williams is, they miss him. (or want to have his babies, not sure which)

conference starts proper, Tim Bray wants an OOo based blogging solution, 70 people start writing ones. Went to er’s localization thing, and flr’s interesting Xforms et al presentation. ssa’s demo of using mozilla’s XUL for OOo dialogs rocked big time, Want source of demo/hack to play with and show people.

intel stuff on performance was interesting, a nice diagram of lstats and backtraces that looks like some monsterous bladed torture machine.

got hideously wet on travel to dinner by foot, sunnies swanked into the event dry after being shuttled around by car. bah!

helpcontent2 building

Friday, September 16th, 2005

OOo’s helpcontent2 is notoriously slow to build. gcj users can try out the testing issue 54692 patch to improve buildtime. Comparisons here are for just the “sbasic” HelpLinking in helpcontent2/util/sbasic.

1:02:31 generic gij invocation against aot compiled jars

shrinking OOo a bit more
Build against system icu-3.4
Build against libxslt instead of sablot

timing comparisons:
I thought I’d try and compare OpenOffice.org 1.1.X and 2.0 startup times, so with a rough and ready harness of date +%S:%N && oowriter with a gettimeofday in metacity’s meta_window_new_with_attrs to measure time from launch to appearance of the splashscreen and then arrival of toplevel writer frame. Run four times in a row, throw away 1st results, average remainder. Tests run on my rawhide dell latitude d800 laptop

rawhide (fc5) 1.9.128-2: gcc 4.0.1, -Os, visibility enabled, prelinked, libsoffice.so linked to pagein-common contents, custom swriter.bin linked to pagein-writer contents and libsoffice.so. Dependancies satisfied by system libs where possible rather than internal copies.
0.748 seconds from launch to splashscreen
2.529 seconds from launch to writer frame

upstream www.openoffice.org rpms 1.9.128: gcc 3.4.3, -Os, visibility enabled, Dependancies satisfied by internal copies where possible rather than system libs.
1.363 seconds from launch to splashscreen
3.983 seconds from launch to writer frame

fc3 1.1.3-11: gcc 3.4.3, -O1. Dependancies satisfied by system libs where possible rather than internal copies.
1.455 seconds from launch to splashscreen
4.558 seconds from launch to writer frame
