A reasonably neato patch to OOo to use pstoedit to make an emf preview (or ghostscript directly to make a png as a fallback) if you insert an eps into a OOo which doesn’t already have one. Very nice rendering from the the libemf pstoedit backend I have to say. Would also more of less solve handling “Export to PDF” with such embedded eps as well.
Poked at how pdflatex handles inserting pdfs into other pdfs, non-trivial. Need to be able to properly parse the PDFs in question.
