Research positions for non-UK graduates at Brighton

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

If you’re a non-U.K. graduate and you’re intrested in a paid research position in the area of computer graphics and cultural visualisation (including HCI and user interaction design) there are two positions available at the University of Brighton. More details at http://www.chiron-training.org/, but if you want the details of these specific positions email me. Do it soon as the closing date for applications is 15th September 2006.

In other news I scored a “scintillating” try during a rugby tournament at the weekend. We’re being a little generous with our superlatives I think, but it wasn’t a particularly bad try. I was on the wing and we had an overlap from the back of a ruck (I think, can’t quite remember). The ball came out quickly and went straight down the line. I got the ball just outside the 22 about 5 metres from touch. I ran through one tackle and got the ball down as I was being tackled just over the try line. I should’ve dived :) But it’s not a bad outing for my first game for the first team (I normally play seconds). The trials for the first team are on Saturday and I hope to do myself justice and at the least secure a place on the second team, I’ll be disappointed with less.

Curtains to NVidia

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

I’d rather spend another three hours re-hanging the curtains in the sitting room than buy any NVidia product ever again. NVidia graphics cards are brittle and only work in certain configurations blessed by NVidia. Unfortunatly I tend to step outside their fast path and run on configurations that NVidia don’t support. I should add that Intel graphics cards are not brittle and run under all my funky configurations. I don’t care anymore that NVidia are a trillion times faster, I’ll buy the Intel cards with the Free Software drivers. PS: I didn’t actually buy this laptop. If I did it would have an Intel card, even the 845G is fine in my book, but the 4G stuff rocks.

….And if any visitor to my house tells me that the curtain pole is crooked, you’ll be sleeping on the floor. That goes for you too Barrett!

Wedding and Honeymoon

Friday, August 18th, 2006

Lori and I got hitched on the 22nd of July. Thanks for all the good wishes from my students, ILUG and IFSO. The wedding was fantastic. Evidence of Vishal enjoying it can be found here, here and here. Vish is special…..Anyway. L. looked amazing (as usual, but better than usual obviously)

The photos of the honeymoon are at http://minds.may.ie/~balor/photographs/honeymoon/. We went to Dubai for 4 nights and then to the Maldives for 10. I can highly recommend Dubai as a great destination. The Maldives were fantastically chilled out, but I don’t think I’d pay the prices they charge again, you could get better value in Europe. Even though Dubai was expensive it was much better value than the Maldives. Anyhow, the photos are a choice selection of the 700 we took :P

Shouts out to Des, Dave and Vish for performing valuable services during the wedding celebration.
