Getting some excercise

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

As a geek I’ve a pretty sedentary job. I write lectures, I code and I run tutorials. Lecturing isn’t exactly a physical job so I’ve been maintaining a bit of a beer gut lately. For the sake of my future health I have to get some excercise.

So I joined the local rugby club. The training was initially hard, but now I can get through a training session. I also played my first match for the Eastbourne second team over the weekend, as hooker. We got beaten (as we had 13 players versus their 15) and I got mangled in the scrum. We lost pretty much all our own scrums the first half. This may have something to do with me having been moved from wing to hooker about five minutes before the match.

Anyway, it’s good to get some excercise and I hope I’ll get a little fitter soon.

nakatomiweb.com

I’m glad to see that the backlash against nakatomiweb hasn’t started yet. But it won’t be long because backlash is such a web 2.0 thing, just look at Google buying Writely.

I was talking to a $NAMELESS_HARDWARE_VENDOR who is supplying nakatomiweb.com (I know, it’s very .bomb to have a single hardware vendor) who let slip some interesting plans. Seemingly the main goal of nakatomiweb.com is to use social software to out the truths of scientology and romour has it that because Katie Holmes is becoming involved, Joshua Jackson a.k.a. Pacey from Dawsons Creek will be involved in the launch party in order to – once again – save the day.

C# version 3.0

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

I like C#. It’s Java done right, particularly Mono the Novell sponsored .Net CLR. But this is pretty silly, particularly the var keyword.

The new object initialiers are cool, but the var keyword sucks. Shall I say it again?

Furthermore I can’t see the the reason for anonymous types as sysntactic sugar for anonymous classes. I suppose it’s like a dictionary object in Python, or a Perl hash.

Lastly, Python has no concept of an abstract method. That’s strange.

Wow Web 2.0 at its best.
